Walt Disney Animation Studios in Burbank, California is where magic comes to life as artists create beloved characters and films. Inspired by the Emmy Award-winning short film "Once Upon A Studio," Disney is introducing a new family experience, "The Magic of Disney Animation," to Disney’s Hollywood Studios. This immersive area reimagines the iconic Roy E. Disney Animation Building and brings animation to life like never before.

In 2026, the current Star Wars: Launch Bay will transform into a whimsical space topped by Mickey’s iconic Sorcerer Hat, featuring playful adventures throughout various studio departments where characters have come alive. Guests will discover interactive moments such as portraits coming to life, an inspirational short film, and opportunities to learn how to draw their own character sketches.

The experience includes the “Drawn to Wonderland” indoor playground inspired by the original "Alice in Wonderland" concept art from Disney Legend Mary Blair. It features an oversized flower garden with musical instruments, a Mad Tea Party playset, and a Tulgey Wood exploration area, providing an imaginative space perfect for young guests to discover and play.

Families can enjoy numerous character greetings and interactive areas designed to bring the magic of Disney Animation to life. "The Magic of Disney Animation" promises creative and playful moments for all ages when it opens in 2026 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

The magic extends beyond the building as the entire courtyard will be transformed into "The Walt Disney Studios," inspired by the Burbank studio lot. This includes a new studio theater housing "The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure" and a soundstage featuring a new Disney Jr. show. Visitors can relax, play, and enjoy treats under lush trees while spotting favorite characters around the grounds.

Guests can explore "Off the Page!", an area celebrating the artistry of Walt Disney Animation Studios through six unique departments: Story, Background & Layout, Hand-Drawn Animation, Computer Animation, and Lighting Effects. Each area provides photo opportunities with characters such as Mulan and Rapunzel in settings inspired by animation history.

Created in collaboration between Walt Disney Imagineering and Walt Disney Animation Studios, "Off the Page!" immerses guests in the craft and legacy of animation. Dan Abraham, Director at Walt Disney Animation Studios, hopes the experience will inspire guests to carry on the studio’s legacy into the future.

To prepare for this exciting transformation, Animation Courtyard and Disney Jr. Play and Dance! will close beginning September 25, 2025, though guests will still enjoy "The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure" and exhibits at Walt Disney Presents during this time. The inspiring short film "Once Upon a Studio" that influenced the new experience is available on Disney+.
